I loved discovering that this book was already 21 years old thanks to the references of Tom Brokaw, digital cameras, and Blockbuster. I finally got around to reading Hoot, and I really don't have much to say about it. Some friendships were made and some owls were protected. Sometimes it was funny and sometimes it was confusing and uncomfortable. It was fine.
Roy is starting yet another new school. His dad's government job keeps them moving and Roy is used to it--but doesn't really like it. Now they're in Florida, a far cry from the Montana that he loves. He's getting beat up by the school bully and he's mystified by the super-fast kid who runs with no shoes. Where is he going? Where does he live? And why doesn't he wear shoes?
Hiaasen's first YA novel is a nice lesson in environmentalism. Save the owls, save the world. Well, not exactly; but it is important. A good look at the never-ending growth in America and the sacrifices that the animal kingdom makes for it.

I'm really thankful I got to read this when I was a young teenager. I don't think I would've appreciated this as much now. To be honest, the only reason I knew of this book was book was because Logan Lerman was in the movie adaptation. However, I did enjoy reading the simple and heartwarming story. I liked the characters. They were sweet and innocent which was a breathe of fresh air from all the YA paranormal books I was reading back then.
Overall, this is a great standalone book that everyone should read at least once in their life.

funny
lighthearted
fast-paced
I liked it up until the point I knew exactly what was going to happen; and I knew way too soon.
really really beautiful at the beginning and near the end, but falters a little bit in the middle. you get the sense that Hiaasen loves Florida and nature and is a talented and beautiful writer, but had some trouble putting a plot together around all the Florida and the nature. at least i do
A good story to introduce the importance of nature and nurture to a younger audience, though slightly harder to grasp if you're not fully engaged with the use of American English.
This was adorable. I love the idea that seeing a boy running, just by chance, can completely change your life. Fate.
Excellent writing, very dull. Had to read this for summer reading. Bad summery.
