This Newberry Award-winning book was recommended to me by my grandson Nathan. I loved the book and see why he does, too. Roy, our middle school hero is new to his school. He sees a young boy running with no shoes. With a new pair of sneakers that don't fit Roy he searches for the boy to give him the shoes. So begins an adventure that leads to standing up to the school bully, rallying classmates to save the owls at a construction site and making new friends. The way Roy "solves" all his "problems" along the way are both legal and thoughtful, as is the advice and support given by his parents. The dialog is believable and the story is both exciting and funny for children and adults. Highly recommended.

I had heard good things about this and I saw it at the library so I decided to read it.

I think it's probably great for kids but it left me a little cold. I think it's a nice way to get the idea of protecting animals across to kids and bring it all closer to home than worrying about more exotic tropical animals.

No real issues with the book - I'm just the wrong audience.

an unexpected amt of copaganda and the belief in like, the efficacy of prison in it

Meh - it read like a movie script to me.

Great read! Full of mystery, humor, and environmentalism! A great introduction to young readers about the importance of conservation.

The great storytelling and direct writing I expect from Hiaasen, but not much of the absurdity I also expect. A good YA novel, but a run-of-the-mill Hiaasen novel.

I liked some parts of this book but I felt it was a bit preachy.
