dark mysterious

I have never listened to the author’s podcast and did not know it existed prior to buying this book. I still wouldn’t know about it if not for the little blurb on the front cover. I feel like this book was written more for the shock value (I.e. the descriptive torture elements) than the actual story. It was very choppy for me and it was hard to keep track of who was where when the author switched between the two characters. However, as someone who also works in the pathology field, I appreciated light being shined onto the professions mentioned.

This book is not for the faint of heart. It alternates between the points of view of a serial killer and a medical examiner and shares ALL of the gory details that you might imagine them to have to share. Definitely not a book to listen to with the kids in the car or around anyone squeamish or while in the drive thru pharmacy. People may give you a side eye.

It was a good story. A psychological thriller at its best. The author's use of prose and descriptive words was impressive. The characters were kind of flat and could have been developed more. But the thing that brought this book down to a 3-star rating is the ending. Frankly, I'm pissed! It just ended abruptly with no resolution to the story. Perhaps there's a sequel in the works? I don't know. But it left me feeling so unsatisfied.

Rating = 3.5 ⭐'s rounded down because of the ending.

The whole time I read this book, I kept wish washing back and forth that I liked it and then I didn’t like it. There were some really strong parts in this book, especially the last 60 or so pages, but throughout I sometimes found myself lost as a reader. Good plot and great descriptions of events and just the right amount of gore. I kind of wish there was a prologue at the beginning to really set the story up. Overall, 3.5/5

Loved and binged 99% of this book but then the ending didn't hit the right spot for me. In saying that, it was still such an addictive read and the ending doesn't take away from how much I enjoyed reading the rest of it - I need book 2 ASAP!

This book was graphic, shocking and so interesting as it changed between POV killer & "good guy".

if you want a serial killer very pointedly sending messages to a medical examiner and doing wild cat and mouse stuff with the perspective swapping between them. read it. like i couldnt put it down read it all at once its good. it is uhhh very detailed and gross re: bodies on account of medical examiner but it IS accurate and also had me flipping out literally every chapter.

warning you might also be unable to put it down because like. there is no slow start. this thing hits you in the face with a mallet looney tunes style like you are IN IT NOW
