so, this started out FAST, and i truly appreciate it, honestly. nothing more boring than a thriller that drags it out.

three point five stars because i devoured this book after being in a reading slump for so long. three point five stars because it reads like a movie or a few limited episodes in a streaming service. for a debut novel, it did the job!

the plot is gripping and i appreciate that it took me a while to catch on what was going on, but once i did, i was eager to see where exactly the author was taking it. i read about half of it when it first came out and life happened and i never finished it, so i was wondering where and how the second book fits in. i’m ready to see how the characters deal with the aftermath of the bayou butcher, and i cannot wait to see what the bayou butcher gets into next!

This was a fast, easy read that switches p.o.v.'s between a serial killer and the woman trying to find him. A few good twists, but overall a very average thriller. A little bummed it wasn't a standalone.

solid 3.5- 3.75 for me!
i’ve been reading a lot of fantasy and romance recently and wanted to change it up with a quick thriller read and i’m really glad i read this!
i thought the dual perspective was very captivating - and going into the mind of a killer is always an interesting experience. and the TWIST. blindsided in the best way. such a sick plot twist and i loved it.
my main criticisms relate to the depth of the characters and some of the missing plot points. i wanted to know more about Jeremy’s plan. he kept alluding to his 7 year plan but we never actually saw what it was or were given an indication for why he did the things he did. i wanted to know more about him as a person and what made him tick and why he was so messed up. i also wanted to know more about Wren in the years when she first got away. a little flashback moment would have been nice. it would have been really interesting to find out how she coped and why she didn’t move away and instead stayed in the town she was almost murdered in. and i didn’t expect the ending at all. it’s always the killer gets caught so it was so refreshing to have something different and shocking at the end.
overall though, i give this book a thumbs up and will recommend it to friends. i’m excited to see alaina grow as an author and can tell her next works will just get even better! i will certainly be on the lookout for them whenever they may come.

Keeping in mind I'm a huge fan of Morbid, and this is her first book, I give this book a 3-4. I really enjoyed the story line and how it flowed. That was very well done. The writing was a bit cheesy and amateur in my opinion. Just a bit overly flowery and repetitive in my opinion (examples: continuous mentioning of him pushing his blonde hair off his face and the hot weather.)

I would have also liked to see a bit more character development with Wren instead of just the Butcher.
Overall it was a good read and I will definitely read the next one when it comes out.

4.5/5

Redo of my review now that I know this is a series and not a one off book.

This was fantastic, I was deeply enthralled in both characters POVs and couldn't wait for either part of the story. Maybe I'm just dumb but I was not expecting the twist in the middle, I had a feeling about half of it but not the entirety. The ending is a fantastic ending now that I know it is a series, it left me excited for the next book where hopefully we get a big face off and Wren does what we're all wanting her to do

I know Wren is married and maybe I'm delusional and just didn't get enough of her husband but I thought her and Will and had some chemistry
