I love tjr a lot but there was no nuance to this book, we just got told everything straight away
Malibu Rising starts off interesting and enjoyable but the second it starts trying to be clever with a moral message it just falls off - the writing is too clear cut to have these underlying clever messages because they are written as neither underlying nor clever
also the characters get tiring after a while (except for hud actually I enjoyed him throughout) because everything about them is clear from the beginning and therefore just gets rinsed and repeated
big fan of the idea though so if anyone knows any books set fully in a party just exploring the different characters.. hmu

cant wait to read Carrie Soto I’m trying to find my fave tjr because I know it’s out there

stylistically one of the more interesting books i’ve read. rarely do i find pieces of myself in all the characters in a story, but TJR tends to make you feel like you could be anyone. not because your identity is malleable but because she writes her characters to resemble both celebrities of their own worlds and extremely average people. anxiously waiting for her next book.

Enjoyed this read, at times it moved so quickly and with so many characters.
