The banter was bantering, the mystery was a bit predictable but honestly I was here for it. Veronica is a delight and Stoker is the cliche ruffian but I love everything about this.

Late 1800s England, Veronica Speedwell buries her aunt- the only family she had left and hopes to travel the world and continue her studies on butterflies. Her plans are interrupted when she returns home to an apparent sacking that turns into attempted kidnapping until she is 'rescued' by a German baron who insists she accompany him for her own safety.

Things further go awry when the baron is found dead and Veronica and his old friend Stoker must find out what happened.

I've been waiting so lost to start this series and I'm glad I've finally gotten to it. I don't know why but I always assumed the was YA, it is not.

I really enjoyed the characterization of Veronica and Stoker but most of the side characters blended together for me. That could be more due to the audiobook than anything else.

I thought this was funny and I'm excited to see where the story goes.

I really enjoyed parts of the book, but the pacing feels really stop and go. The action parts are very fast, everything else is very slow.

“In my experience it is far better to tell a man what he wants to hear then do as you please, than attempt to reason with him.”

Veronica Speedwell turned out to be one feisty and funny Victorian lady! I knew nothing of this series, or of the author for that matter, the name catching my attention due to its similarity to mine. It turned out to be a light adventure mystery that I very much enjoyed, more for the characters than the plot.

After burying her ‘aunt’, and thwarting a robbery/kidnapping attempt, Veronica finds herself chased by persons unknown. Our intrepid woman, a lepidopterist with travel and life experience, is not at first much worried by what looks like a random act, especially since she has nothing of value. However, when the kind Baron, who had promised her some answers on her parentage, is found murdered, she is forced to take the situation seriously and partner up with the irascible Stoker, an old friend of said Baron.

Most of the novel portrays the spiky relationship between these two protagonists to great humour. One is an analytical lady with no regard for English social mores, who continually shocks the mountain of a man that is Stoker. The funny thing is of course that these two have in fact a lot in common.

The pace, after the bang of the first few events, slows down quite a bit, focusing on our duo and their partnership. On one hand, I appreciated the time used to flesh out Veronica and Stoker, and both their background, but another part of me would have liked a couple more twists and turns in that mid section. Thankfully, the ending sped right up with discoveries and confrontations.

Looking forward to more adventures from these two, and let’s face it, see Veronica shock the world around her.
