Boring af. There was a murder and I want to know more about it and Veronica background. I don't care for the circus. I don't care about the romance. I don't care, give me the mystery plot I was promised.

Fun to read for the banter. So outside of the period that it took me out of the story, and I find the mystery part a bit dumb.

The title says it all....this is a beginning of a series and it's very curious. "curious" in the sense of a light-hearted stroll through curiosities of 1800 London. These include explorers, butterfly specimens, stuffed elephants, hugely large ladies, tattooed strongmen, and faintly villainous Professors who are joined at the middle to their Siamese Twin who communicates through accordion rather than words.

So maybe not completely light-hearted.

The main character does seem to be the target of mysterious assassination attempts, and she is dropped off under the care of an arrogant, irritated, gruff alpha-male who has terrible secrets of his own.

If you've read her Lady Julia Grey series and enjoyed them, you'll like this, too. Veronica Speedwell is as curious about mysteries and assured of her own ability to manage things as Julia-- with the added frisson of sexual confidence and experience. Stoker is just as tormented in his own way.

But this is not the emotional roller-coaster of that series. It's more of an adventure tale with lots of cool and eccentric side characters and interesting locales and scientific references to butterfly names.

An entertaining, delicious read. And, as the Julia Grey series taught me to expect, experiencing the hero and heroine's relationship's slow build will be as fun as ever.

Very cute, I got a little bored mid-way through, the end was good
