Loved everything about it but think the flashbacks could have been tied into the story. They kind of exist in isolation, mostly to educate the reader and humanise some minor characters, but they have no consequence for the main story.

While I love a good queer historical fiction novel, this plot dragged consistently for me. It had both too much and too little dialogue at the same time (if that's possible) and I didn't find the main characters all that loveable. The premise was very interesting but I felt like the execution was definitely lacking.

This book provided beautiful insight into what was and what might have been in 1950s San Fransisco, centring a young Chinese girl coming to grips with her sexuality and her future. I loved how deeply the historical aspects of this book are linked to the fictional characters' lives, and the strong sense of place evoked throughout. While the contextual tensions of the book play a major role, Lo maintains a mood of hope. At times, I wanted more exploration of the romance between the two main characters and particularly of the love interest.

This is a wonderful and refreshing coming of age story! I loved Lily and loved seeing her discover who she was and wanted to be. I loved the historical aspects as well and really enjoyed reading from a perspective I’d never seen featured in a story before.
