The book became a bit difficult to push through and took me a while to read due to the abundant misogyny and objectification of women it contains, which is a shame considering it had such an interesting and unique plot and concepts within it. Definitely a hard book to rate due to it having so many great things to it as well as so many issues.

hard book to talk about! really loved nakata and the way he moves through his life, felt very taoist? but I don’t know enough to judge if this is the most accurate lense.
at times found the book a bit opaque and difficult to untangle ideas about war, fate, memory etc etc but then at times really almost annoyingly didactic, especially from oshima about art, but i did like oshima a lot regardless

the chapter with the feminists felt like murakami creating people that don’t really exist in this combination of extremity and total foolishness to prove a point that could have been proved in a less annoying way.
still I found his treatment of oshima’s gender much more sensitive than I expected (but still revealed in an annoying gotcha moment)

also one more negative note UMMM found the incest and rape scenes pretty horrible to read- not something that puts me off a book necessarily depending upon how it’s handled but since murakamis descriptions of sex feel ripped from like a raunchy 80s magazine (so silly man like i actually laughed a couple of times when kafkas penis would make an appearance mid unrelated paragraph) it felt pretty gross most of the time

ANYWAY DISREGARD MY HATEFULNESS I really liked this book I found many  of the characters very compelling loved the surreal aspects and I am always a huge fan of magical realism. This is my first murakami book and im for sure interested in reading more I just love to hate and nitpick so I am sorry for this. Sick and delirious right now please don’t judge my clarity too harshly ❤️❤️ I would have given it a high star rating I just can never settle on a rating dont  really like them for me

I’ve been told murakami said to understand this book you’ve to read it multiple times, probably won’t ever do that, I dont think I understood it to be honest but it was still really enjoyable to read, loveddd the imagery and the whole way through I was hooked but I just don’t think I’ll ever read it enough times to actually understand it, maybe that will change though

everyone says to start reading murakami with either this book or norwegian wood, but i never read norwegian wood and read seven of his other books before this one. and i’m glad i did. it feels full. it feels like reading arundhati roy, even though their styles are so different, every single moment in the book is carefully chosen. none of it is auxiliary.
