Bought this book in Japan funnily enough and was intrigued by this book. Everything about Murakami's writing is enchanting. You lose sense of realism really midway in the book and follow Murakami on the journey. Cant go wrong too much with this one.

This entire book never fails to make me cry over and over again every time I read it. It’s amazingly written and I wish I could read this for the first time again

2.5 — In Kafka On The Shore I found myself caring less and less about our serious protagonist as the story progressed, but I was delighted each time our deuteragonist, Mr. Nakata (and his accomplice Mr. Hoshino), made an appearance. Whether it was their hilarious interactions with cats or corporate mascots, Nakata and Hoshino served as welcome relief from Kafka’s increasingly tedious rumination on his trauma and identity.

I love this man but I really wish he’d ignore the fact that just because the age of consent in Japan IS low, doesn’t mean you’ve gotta use it as a plot point at several times in a book.

Perhaps the worst aspect of this book is the casual inclusion of incest, paedophila and rape, which occur without consequences or any moral questions. The female characters are little more than vessels to sexually gratify the men in the story.

I read to the end hoping the many nonsensical aspects would be explained and was left disappointed. Fish/leeches falling from the sky? Johnny Walker? Colonel Sanders? WWII soldiers? Why did the children collapse? Why was Nakata affected differently?

After sitting through endless mundane pages of people drinking coffee, eating food and wandering aimlessly, I feel like I wasted my time on this book.

The author suggests reading the book several times to extract the meaning of it all but I certainly won't be doing that.
