This entire book felt like a fever dream. I was so intrigued by it. Nothing made sense and many parts made me deeply uncomfortable but it was so worth it. If someone asked me what this book was about I literally don’t know what I would say. Should probably re-read at some point

Reading this was an experience unlike any I've ever had before. This book is unassuming and conspicuous, it has nothing special at first glance. I started this expecting a good story, but nothing mind-blowing. I'm so happy to have been proven wrong.

This book is worth all the hype. Quite a few times it takes some strange and unexpected turns, but this is one of the reasons why it's so good. You never really know where you are going until you get there. You don't know how Nakata's (the old man) and Kafka's stories will meet until the end, and even then you don't have all the answers - but you don't want all the answers. You want this feeling of incompleteness, you want this mystery. The whole appeal of this book, for me, was that I didn't have all the answers. I don't have half the answers to what happened. And I love it.

Ik heb mijn demente grootvader meer steekhoudende verhalen horen vertellen. Ik heb graag iets meer verhaal en iets minder casual pedofilie in boeken, thank you very much.

never in my life have i taken this long to read a book. by the end of it i quite enjoyed it although the middle was a fucking drag. enjoyed nakata’s chapters more initially but when hoshino became the focus i was less interested. the surrealism is fun and the last maybe 100 pages were really great. obviously the incest was gross but it’s murakami and i can see how some of it made sense thematically, although
the sister rape dream was really gross
anyways i did actually like this but i think i’m done with murakami for a while. the book did my head in at times

EDIT: considering this book put me in a SIX MONTH reading slump i think i’ve got some kind of stockholm syndrome in still saying i enjoyed it.
