After getting off to a slow start (first ~100 pages) the magical realism kicks in, then the books goes into overdrive and it is magical surrealism and a really gripping tale. The high brow references across both Eastern and Western culture (music, literature, philosophy..) reminded me a bit of reading Umberto Eco.

Two or three especially intense chapters had an interesting mid-chapter switch between "traditional" first person narrative and a strange second person narrative -- the first person "narrator" suddenly switched to "you" where "you" felt like the reader -- so as the reader, I felt pulled into the book. Very interesting (and convincing..) technique.

This was definitely an unconventional read, to say the least. It was unconventional in the weirdest ways imaginable and although I applaud the author’s imagination wholeheartedly, I have to say that it was rather painfully slow at times. I don’t mind slow books usually. But this one just had a lot of details and a lot of unnecessary descriptions.
Even so, never before have I read a book that explores human emotions and the various levels of those emotions with such depth as this one. Some were just beyond my comprehension and I found myself pause and think about it for a long time, waiting for it to sink in.

Kafka on The Shore tells two entirely different stories and connects them in a mindblowingly natural way. One is about a 15 year old boy who runs away from home to find himself and also to avoid a terrible danger threatening to possess him. But he has to be “the toughest 15 year old on the planet”. The other one is an old, “not so bright” man, who can talk to cats. But after an incident, he has to leave the place that he hadn’t left in his whole life.

Kafka on The Shore will teach you to let go of things that you have no control over and make peace with the demons that haunt you. It is sure to move you and open your mind in ways that you could never have imagined.

Every single woman is an object of the main character’s sexual desire. With the exception of the two feminist women, they’re not feminine or attractive enough.
