Wow. It will take a while to metabolize this book. More comments to follow...
I took way too long to finish this book. And in the time it took me to write this review, I've bumped it up by one star. This book sits well. The more I think about, the less it matters that there were so many things that I didn't understand. Because there is so much more to this book than just the plot. When I was reading the book, it was constantly weirding me out and completely incomprehensible. But I guess I was too close to the puzzle to see the picture that was forming.
There were times when I wanted to quit and move on to another book. But I'm glad I stuck it out. Not because there was a satisfying ending. It just feels complete. Of course, I still feel I haven't formed a complete opinion of it yet, either. So I'll reserve judgement until I read it again. Which I definitely think I will.

I sobbed in the end. It’s mind-blowing, mind-bending, enthralling and so much wisdom in these 500 pages (almost) of pure great literature.

I had no idea what to expect with this book. It had received a number of excellent professional critic reviews. I did read some of the unflattering comments posted on goodreads.com, but I wanted to see for myself.
The story has many magical elements set against a modern, realistic backdrop. I am not sure that I really understood all of the symbols, but I enjoyed the challenge of trying to figure them all out. This story is somewhat slow and very disturbing at times. However, the level of writing is excellent and it is definitely worth reading for those who enjoy magical realism. It is probably too far out there for those who do not.

Starts slow, but is so worth it. Becomes a world I want to live in. Very abstract but makes more sense as you read. Feels like a dream. Beautiful setting and captivating plot. Will be reading more Murakami
