It has been so long that I can barely remember the fine details of this story, but I just want you to know that as a child I lived and breathed this story. I remember the beautiful purple cover that I got from a scholastic book fair, the way the pages smelled and the adventure that was kept inside. I remember that I loved this story, the princess, and Phantasmagoria. I know that when my child is old enough I am going to buy her a copy of this so that she can carry it around everywhere with her as I did. It was a magical book then, and a five star read for a little girl with a blossoming love of reading.
Instead of leading a typical helpless, vapid lifestyle, Princess Amy runs off to have adventures and ends up meeting the most awesome prince ever!
Perfect!
Reread: I liked it less this time but still it is a sweet story!

As a child, I think I would have thoroughly enjoyed this book. The moral of the story - that beauty isn't what defines a person and that ordinary-ness can be happiness so long as you choose it - is one that I think everyone could benefit from learning. The fact that it is passed along in a story of princesses and princes and woods and little animal friends just makes it that much more fun.
That being said, I had a hard time enjoying the marriage aspects of the story, but it was written a while back, and written in a time when children were wed, so that was something I had to remind myself of. I also knew what was going to happen from basically the beginning, so reading it as me now, instead of younger me, was less enjoyable than it might've been. I don't know that this is a book I would want to read to kids, or recommend, necessarily, but it was fun and quick and light.

A very quick, charming read, perfect for younger children but also perfectly lovely for adults.

I've read this book many times after I found it in Cricket magazine as a child. It is one of my favorite fairy tales. A girl who takes her destiny into who own hands and does something about her lot in life and is content with simple things. I would recommend this book to anyone.
