This is my absolute favorite children's book. I used to read it over and over again as a kid, and I still find myself picking it up from time to time when I feel like reading a book that I know will make me happy. It's utterly charming and sweet, but not the typical princess story. Amy is smart, fun-loving, and adventurous, and the book conveys the message that being true to yourself is more important than being pretty. I can't wait to share this with my kids someday.
Simple but entertaining fairytale. Some of it was kind of dated but it was pretty good. The illustrations were nice as well.
This was such a sweet and comforting little fairy tale. It was the perfect little book to read in bed on my first morning back home, while I was so jet-lagged and tired, and only the story and a nice cup of tea kept me awake and going.
Very old-fashioned, in the nicest possible way. Felt more like a Beverley Nichol's tale from the 1950s than a product of the 80s. It's brief, clearly a fairy-tale (the characters are pretty much surface-thin, rather than the rich delving into personality we've come to expect from most novels--the King's character trait is he says "rash" and the Queen's is that she faints), but it's all in keeping with the dainty light tone established right away.
My only regret would be its slightness--with more room we could have had both the elegance and the richness/depth. As a result, it's entertaining, delightful, but not remotely moving.
(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!

This was a simple, sweet story. I would have liked it to be more developed. It was a little too simple and the style was very “tell” not “show”. It was fine, but not a favorite of mine.
I absolutely loved this book. It's got many genres all wrapped into one. I'm a fairy tale kind of girl, and this was perfect.
I saw this book on a friends to read list and decided to try it out. I am so glad that I did. I seem to be on a juvenile literature kick these days but I'm loving all the stories. this story is wonderful. I love the character of Amy and her outlook on life. I wish that I could have had that same outlook growing up. I look forward to sharing this story with my daughter. I hope that it will help her grow up with better self-esteem and self-awareness in this image obsessed world we live in. I loved it and would recommend it. it was an easy read and only took a couple of hours. I'm glad that I bought the book.
