Getting better!

The problem with volume 2 of Suicide Squad is pretty similar to the problem with volume 1 - the story feels weird and disjointed for four issues/chapters, and then the last bit somewhat redeems it all.

Volume 2, however, works a little less because it has less Harley Quinn (which, let's face it, is the only reason people are reading Suicide Squad), and is much less interesting on a whole. Certainly one of the more frustrating graphic reads of late for me if only because I feel like this can be picked apart to death even though there's a good amount to enjoy here.

I had really enjoyed learning more about Amanda Waller's past in this volume. It really shines a light on why there is the "Task Force" to begin with. I found myself having more empathy for her. I definitely wish that the movie had this kind of plotline and not the one they went for.

The main trouble I have with this iteration of Suicide Squad is that Waller is so easy to hate. Because she is so unlikable, the main thing I am waiting for is for the members of Suicide Squad to attempt to kill her. Which means I don't care that much about the missions. They are just the filler while I wait for someone to punch Waller in the throat. And it isn't that I want her to be a good person. It's that I want her to make sense. Sending your team in with no information is just stupid. I don't get the impression that she wants to fail... but her actions make it appear that way.

Probably a 2.5ish that I'm rounding up because I'm nicer than I should be.

Review to come

Is it just me or was that terrible?

It was so cliched and ridiculous, completely over the top. All of this would have been okay if it had even the hint of self-awareness, a little bit of camp tongue and cheek. Mayans? Human sacrifice? Sleeper Agents?! This read like a bad bad action movie.

I kept waiting for an appearance from Michael Scarn...

There was pretty much no redeeming quality. Boring action sequences, predictable "twists", and dialogue that was just sad. Was whoever wrote this even trying?

It is such a stark contrast, because I really did enjoy the first volume. Unfortunately, all of the things that I loved about the first volume are gone, the video game mission feel and a fun dose of violence.

Oh boy. You know, I thought a bunch of maniacs put together to carry out missions would be fun based on their individual, unstable characters and how that would play out when they were all tossed together, but this second volume was even worse than the first!

The story is a mess and the characters flatter than ever and they are often dying for no reason at all (for example
Spoilerthere was no gain for Deadshot when he killed Lime - or was it Light?! one of those green twins anyway
). Moreover, all that preaching from Diablo ... no, just no. Not to mention that the writer(s) seriously tried to make me believe that a guy like Boomerang knew and used the expression TEMPUS FUGIT. Yeah, right!
The only good character was Nana. Oh and King Shark made me chuckle twice. But that's it and that is really bad.

I had to force myself to finish this and was sorely disappointed, even more than by the first volume, so if this doesn't pick up soon ...

Kind of a letdown after this series's awesome debut. The action and overarching plot are all pretty good, but the writing is so godawful that it really takes away from it. The dialogue is crap, and it feels at home in a parody of a bad action movie. I really home that this series gets better, because it showed a lot of promise in volume one.

Another action packed volume! Saboteur's abound! Mind control! Guns! It's all in here.

I thoroughly enjoy these Suicide Squad books. Harley plays quite a central role and Deadshot is the best male anti-hero around. The art is good, the writing is edgy. What more could a girl want?
