Luckily, Stephanie Foo did not just write a memoir - as a journalist, she researches very well and takes the reader on a journey from her childhood to the first real results of her recovery.
By doing so, she doesn’t try to paint a picture of a miracle healing, but shows, how hard it is to find individual solutions in a dysfunctional medical system where not enough professionals are familiar with this young diagnosis. She elaborates how racism and sexism play a part in c-ptsd and does not shy away from talking about genetics and intergenerational trauma.

At some points in the early chapters the abuse is written quite graphic, so be aware of that, otherwise I’d say it is the perfect book for someone recently diagnosed with c-ptsd or people who are close to someone with this diagnosis. It also has a lot of quotes for follow-up-literature.

Beautifully written with a perfect blend of science and personal stories. What else can I say? It's a great book and I'm glad I read it. 100% would read it again. Mind the trigger warnings and be gentle with yourself, though. The book can be a heavy read at points.

You don't have to have CPTSD to learn and grow from this book. This was recommended in a Divorce group I am in and it was so interesting and helpful from a healing perspective. As a queer and mixed-race person, there were lots of notes in this book that rang true for me--generational trauma, the long term effects of microaggressions, the effects of COVID and the current political climate--as well as the difficult goal of changing learned behaviors and reactions. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to overcome trauma of any kind. There is hope and there are a LOT of roads to healing.

A deeply insightful and helpful read that has helped me understand my own diagnosis and mental health better. I feel equipped with more tools to handle it as well as a new kindness towards myself and new expectations that I need to get more comfortable with over time. I appreciated the authors authenticity and honesty and although we had vastly different experiences a lot of what she experiences were hugely relatable. It felt good to not be alone in that. I will leave it there. A bit emotional and lots to unpack but I am glad I read it.
