One of my favorite books of this year. This book is such a raw, vulnerable, and beautiful examination of mental health and trauma.

I know she wrote, in the intro, that this book has a happy ending. But honestly, I'm not sure that's true.

I mean -- yes -- for her, absolutely. Her journey from where she started to where she ended up -- incredible. But also, I don't think anyone in the history of the world has ever worked as hard as Stephanie Foo has to heal. And very very few people have the contacts and resources that she does.

This is not a dig against the book, of course. The writing was phenomenal. And even though it was very heavy, it was still compulsively readable.

But also, the feeling it left me with was -- Is this really what it takes to heal? This? ALL THIS???

It left me, quite frankly, demoralized.

This was a fascinating read as it relates to CPTSD; there aren’t always many books about it out there. The narrative of the author’s experience(s) with her parents needs countless content warnings. The latter part of the book where she details her therapy modalities and audio clips are included is quite helpful for one’s own reflection and consideration in types of healing.

one of those pieces of media where you’re eternally screaming “get out of there” to the narrator but she just. won’t. and thus her story begins. an incredibly raw and honest look at complex trauma and the things that cause/exacerbate/help/heal it. i found it more difficult to get through than most this length, but i think that mostly had to do with the subject matter and finding it hard to sit down and read about abuse for more than thirty minutes straight. highly recommend to anyone in a space where they are able to digest this type of content.
