I remember liking this a lot more when I first read it. I did not recall how convoluted it becomes with a lot of "extra stuff". The main plot is interesting, but it goes in too many directions. And I also failed to recall that this book is like Doctor Who's tardis; way bigger on the inside than you'd expect. Somewhere around the halfway mark I started to skim. And that's pretty much what I did until the end. A very cool concept, but just TOO MUCH. This one wore me down.

Has a 16th century Venice feel. Thieves, scoundrels, heists, and money. Starts slow, but when it picks up, buckle up, and hold on!

Set in a modern day crime novel, the plot would have enough twists and turns to keep you riveted. The Gentleman Bastards are confidence tricksters, grifters and con-men in a low-magic medieval setting, with bloody, luscious, combat scenes.
The setting so vivid and detailed, and the characters so entertaining. Locke and his crew of thieves are all great characters, and most of the supporting cast are brilliant as well. they're all unique and memorable, and even minor characters are given enough personality to make them interesting. This book is clever, it’s often very funny, and the world-building is excellent.
The chapters flip between present day Locke and interludes, where Locke is still a child, which gives the reader a nice insight into backstory. Initially I found the beginning of the novel difficult to get into, even considering putting it down, but I’m extremely glad I didn’t, for the sole reason that it very quickly turned into rip-roaring fun. There is mischief and mayhem aplenty, and what a joy it was to read.

No, because I actually don't know how to feel about this book.... The highes were so incredibly high and the lows were pretty freaking low. Overall I think this book was just a little too much. Does it all come back around? Of course, which makes it a brilliant tapestry of a story with excellent character and world building. However, sometimes I needed it to just move a bit faster. It was hard for me to actually read, but the audio book was incredible. I will be picking up the second one but I'll need some time in between them for sure.
