I love Jon McGregor's writing. He's not an easy read, yet I am always gripped by his stories and characters, and keep coming back for morel. Even the dogs was a masterpiece, and I've enjoyed, and enjoyed the challenge of Lean Stand Fall. I feel I've learned something, experienced something, I am richer for having read. Thank you John. Enjoy the ride fellow readers

The writing was strong, but the story was a let-down -- so many avenues of character development went unexplored, and the last third of the book felt quite cliche/after school special.

I enjoyed this one. I can appreciate Robert’s frustration with his aphasia, and I feel so deeply for poor Anna who’s life was just turned upside down. I enjoyed the writing of the group therapy sessions, which seem to be based on real life experiences.
But. There were places that the pace needed to be a little quicker, and I prefer a clearer ending ..

A novel in three parts. A respected member of Antarctic expeditions has a stroke in a storm while another dies. Was he culpable? In acute recovery and then rehabilitation he tries to find other ways to communicate, but however supported, however hard he tries, there's just never enough detail. The story didn't quite hang together for me - and it was best when contemplating obligations to those who share our lives - in a marriage characterised by absence.

A solid 3.5. I didn’t know what to expect, and was surprised with where it went, but I thought it was quite well done all around.
