I suppose this is really a 4.5-star read for me - some of the individual stories are less than great. However, even the lesser stories benefit hugely from Stephen Fry's reading. It's just pure fun to listen to him recount the adventures of Holmes & Watson. (Even his slightly strained American accent is charming, and his depictions of Holmes and Watson are perfect.) Fry's knowledgeable and fond reflections preface each book, providing a nice peek behind the scenes without distracting from the stories.
The stories themselves are remarkably engrossing given their publication dates from 1892-1927. There are of course some cultural references (and sadly, cultural biases) that don't translate well to modern day, but on the whole, the narration provides an easy and natural immersion in Holmes's London, and triggers a keen desire to find out the solution to each mystery. It was delightful to find myself eager to get back to a 100-year-old story to find out what happens next.

It is no wonder Sir Arthur Doyle killed Sherlock off then tried to shove him into retirement over and over and over again after being forced to bring him back from the dead.
I love Sherlock; conceptually.
As both a teenager and a undergrad student, I read the beloved adventures of Sherlock and Watson, ‘Hounds of the Baskervilles’, ‘A Study in Scarlet’, ‘The Red-Headed League’, ‘A Scandal in Bohemia’ and of course, “The Final Problem”; loving every page
I’l have watched and re-watched the Sherlock movies and series (Enola Holmes included), lauding the screen adaptions as well as the stories in their original written form to all who would listen.
Thus inspired, I decided to read ‘The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes’. A read that felt much like this year of 2020, in that it felt never ending.
No one needs this much Sherlock.
Sherlock himself even found these stories egregious.
Read the well known ones, watch the movies and the series, but no need to slog through this much of it.

My Sherlock feelings can be summed up most neatly as follows: Arthur Conan Doyle didn't even like Sherlock, so why should I?
it's a complete collection...haven't read all of it yet...keep picking it up from time to time
This was awesome and I loved it so much. I'd read all the sherlock holmes books in french but this is the first time it read them in english and i found really enjoyable throughout, though I found that the later short stories weren't as good as the first few ( quite logical considering conan doyle himself was getting tired of sherlock by then) Overal I really loved it all, and it confirms me in my love of everything sherlock homes. Now i've just got to find even more sherlock pastiches to read!
