This was my first read by this author and while it was an interesting enough narrative, I won't be going back to read others by her. The pacing was seriously off on this one. It did not live up to its cover jacket hype. While I loved the character of Morgana the author spent more time taking her on a road trip with her husband's cattle than she spent on developing her powers which were "suddenly just there" when she needed them at a critical moment. It was just a bit too contrived for me at the conclusion. I got the book on discount at my favorite Indy bookstore is about the best I can say about it.

I received my copy of The Winter Witch from the publishers as part of the blog tour.  I had not previously heard of this book or the author, but after some quick research I quickly decided that I HAD to read this book.
When I began reading I thought the first few chapters really grabbed hold, but after that I found myself struggling to turn the pages.  In all honesty it was nothing to do with the story and more the size of the book itself.  Being over 400 pages long, and a hardback, it felt like the book was never ending and I thought I would never make a dent in it.  But I persevered and soon found myself wanting to know what happens, seeing if Morgana and Cai would find some way to make their relationship work and be 'normal'.
The Winter Witch follows Morgana, as she is sent to live with her husband after their marriage has been arranged by her Mother, not only to benefit Morgana, but also to benefit Cai. Without a wife he can't be a drover and it is something he was before His wife died, and something that has been passed down through his family.  Morgana is a strong willed character who you just can't help cheering on. She faced discrimination every single day of her life, and later on abuse from others, yet not once does she give up and walk away. She is determined to see it through and not let anyone scare her away. She faces things head on and when things get tough, she pushes even harder.

The Winter Witch had twists and turns that I never expected, and as each new revelation was uncovered it drew me into the plot even more. The last few chapters had me on tenterhooks wondering what was going to happen next, and when the ending was in sight I thought it ended perfectly. Once I finally fell into the world that Paula has created I found it hard to come out. I had to know what was going to happen to this couple and if the world they were building for themselves would stand the test of time. I found myself wanting to read faster to know how it ends, and as I saw the pages left to read getting smaller and smaller I found myself wanting to keep reading.  Magic is weaved seamlessly through the pages and you soon find yourself astounded with the power that Morgana has and what she can do with it.

Paula has written a story filled with magic, mystery and secrets, one you never know how it will all end.  The Winter Witch was an enjoyable read and I am glad I persevered with this book.

This was just not my book, I don't even think that there was anything wrong with characters or the writing I just didn't enjoy it. Multiple times I considered just stopping but I kept hoping it got better. Unfortunately for me it didn't.

Morgana’s mother marries her to Cai Jenkins. She does it out of love. She worries about Morgana and who will take care of her. Morgana is a nice girl but she has a slight flaw. She does not talk. Morgana has not spoken a word in years.

In the beginning Morgana did not care for Cai. Over time, she came to love Cai and their home together. Morgana meets a woman who helps her unlock the magic within Morgana. Later strange things start happening in town. People grow anxious and blame Morgana for the cause.

I read The Witch’s Daughter but I remember thinking this book was good but I did struggle some with it. I did not have this problem at all with The Winter Witch. In fact, I had devoured the first half of the book before I made myself put it down. There was something spellbinding about Morgana and Cai. The way that Morgana and Cai interacted with each other, I thought brought them closer as Morgana did not talk. Cai is a very caring and patient husband. The way that he cared for Morgana made me fall in love with his more.

Morgana turned out to be a very intriguing character. She started out quiet and I don’t mean this literally. What I mean is that I wondered how this story was going to play out with Morgana not talking. It turned out just fine. I liked that Morgana gained her strength learning magic and with Cai’s love. While Morgana did not display her magic talents often. As she progressed they did get stronger. The ending put a smile on my face. The Winter Witch is a magical journey that you will not want to end!

This seemed a bit like freemen in the beginning but it really is a love story amid a battle of good versus evil. I enjoyed the story!

Didn't read every word. Skipped to the end.

Too obvious. Long.

It was an okay book with a very interesting premise and a mediocre execution. There was a lot of fluff and repetition that there didn’t need to be, while actually interesting concepts or tgemes were ignored or skimmed over. And of course, it suffered greatly from not-like-other-girls syndrome.

This book started out lovely and romantic. The alternating points of view felt seamless and necessary. However, the middle part of the story dragged a wee bit, followed by a somewhat hasty and predictable ending. Still, overall entertaining. Nothing beats the Welsh people for romance.
