2.5/3. this was hilarious and I’m a lover of dry humour but some of it felt disjointed. regardless burroughs has had such an interesting upbringing that at points it’s hard to believe that any of it actually happened

This book was a joy to read - it's good if you don't have enough time to devote to a thick plot development beause it's a number of short stories - but even as someone who tends to plow through their reading it was extremely enjoyable.

Not my favorite book of his, but several of the stories had me cracking up, specifically the one about his hateful grandmother. I love this strange little man and envy his razor sharp memory of the most mundane details and ability to make them utterly hilarious. Highly recommended to fans of Running with Scissors.

Not for me. May be funny for you if you’re a dude but made it halfway & can’t bring myself to care about anything he tells me

✨️ Augusten Burroughs is brilliantly insane in the best possible way—uproariously funny, deliciously profane, and fearlessly bold. "Possible Side Effects" had me laughing until my stomach hurt and gasping for air.

Being funny is no easy feat, but Burroughs effortlessly turns even the most mundane, unjust, or sorrowful subjects into sparkling gold with his writing.

Fair warning: "Possible Side Effects" delves into Augusten's dysfunctional family, childhood struggles, addiction, adult challenges, and touches on social critiques, including some coarse scenes and topics that may not align with everyone's moral standards.

This book is the perfect stopgap for when you just need a good laugh without diving into something complex. It's effervescent comedy with vibrant, relatable characters. 👊

I listened to this on audiobook and I love the entire collection by Augusten Burroughs. This one was by far the most funny. I found myself laughing while driving and listening (although I kind of felt like a crazy person). I definitely recommend it if you are a fan of the author.
