I do not get this book. There are so many good reviews. But the characters are not particularly well developed and the plot is poorly crafted. Which is unfortunate because there are a lot of good ideas that could have resulted in several interesting books.

Really special book with many wonderful stories like a box of treats you unwrap one-by-one, your pressure growing relentlessly until you are unwrapped too. It's also a cunning murder mystery with plenty of suspects; a horror story with frightening antagonists; a story of imperialist ambitions exploitations, and consequences; and finally, a spiritual story that offers a compelling afterlife philosophy, one that rings familiar to Brazilian spiritualists. Very simply, a bloody brilliant novel with a plot that, um, slays, and characters you wish you could dance with or kiss in the dark of the forever night. Grab it and let it gobble up your weekend like I did. You will be so happy!!! :-)

I bought the book and the narration, so I could walk with it, and, yes, I also took my phone into the shower. It's that good! LOL. The narration is SO wonderful. And, yeah, I just preordered Jackdaw. Ha!

Shell campion is piloting her first space mission transporting new colonists to the planet blood root. The AI does most of the flying and shell is there just in case something happens. When shell wakes up after deep sleep, she discovers all is not well. The AI has been damaged and only basic functionality some of the ships passengers are dead, and shell needs to figure out what is going on so she can intrude the safety of the rest of the ship.

I had a ton of fun with this one. It's set in an afrofuturistic setting. It's filled with interesting thoughts about what the future looks like and the stories we might tell if we were telling them from a different cultural perspective. I will be rereading this one.
