Murder on a space ship, but everyone had been asleep for 10 years so, whodunnit.

Alright, enjoyed it and it was fast paced.

Lost in space but also tackles big social issues. Like if Andy Weir’s writing added depth you’d get something this cool

Dang, this book *moves*. Sometimes it felt to me like things were happening too fast for the mystery to actually feel mysterious, but it’s a great ride. I really liked the characters, and Thompson is really good at using multiple POVs to tell a story. The space stuff felt real and grounded, and I appreciated that it’s a story that is equal parts locked-room mystery, space survival adventure, and meditation about humans leaving Earth.

interesting murder mystery in a sci-fi context. good worldbuilding, not hugely character-driven, periodic afrofuturism mentions which is cool. the Fin apology letter arc was anti climactic to his actual crime and that storyline just seemed to disappear, i felt like he should have been writing to a mafia of machines or something (his software mother). not fully fleshed out but i think the author was going a little bit for human racism against AI? one last plus bc the last lines of the book made me think.

3.5 stars. Lots of nice ideas here, big and small. Ultimately somewhat unfulfilling but the characters were good.

This book had such an interesting premise and unfortunately, it just blew it. This is a locked room space murder that was executed poorly. POVs switch rapidly and I was still quite confused by the end. The ending did not feel satisfying in anyway shape or form, nor did it feel purposefully unsatisfied or left open. it simply just....ended. I don't recommend this book, but I don't recommend staying away from it either.

4.7/5: This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. I can’t remember the last time I spent hours reading the same book without getting tired but I found myself unable to put this book down on a 6 hour plane ride.

First and foremost, this is a murder mystery with the same unpredictable twists and turns, the second guessing of each and every character, the close-up plot that keeps zooming out to reveal the whole picture. But more than that, it’s a story about space, politics, oppressive regimes, and honor.

I can see myself reading and rereading this book over and over again.

The reviewer who said this is less of a space mystery and more of a space disaster is spot on! This is my first book by this author, and while the concept and his writing style captured me, the execution of the story fell short. There was a lot of gore and world-building, but I wish there was more emphasis on the mystery and investigation. It's less of a "whodunnit" mystery and more of a space thriller. I feel like the synopsis is a bit misleading in that regard...
