So, I think this is an expectation issue. I thought this was going to be a space murder mystery like the Mur Lafferty books and instead it's more of a space disaster book. In my opinion, you aren't given anywhere enough information to solve the mystery that the book purports to be about. And way too much happens in flashback. Both the main murder victim and killer have their stories told entirely in flashback and you don't encounter either ahead of time.
The writing was okay. And I like the characterisation of Joké. But almost everyone else who speaks could have their lines spoken by somebody else, as their dialogue lacks any variation in tone, syntax or style.
I do like that it involves a Nigerian colony rather than a generic human colony where everybody just gets along.
This just wasn't for me.

This book is spectacular: locked room mystery in space, found family crew, sentient ships and one of the best “first contact” concepts I’ve read. A great escapist read featuring flawed, likeable characters and plenty of plot twists.
I really wanted to like this but had the hardest time staying interested/invested
[edit - this says I've read twice but I cannot figure out how to delete one of the times... grrr...]

Poorly timed plot, uninteresting characterisation. Shame because it had an interesting premise.

This started strong but found myself really not enjoying it as it continued. Reading it gave me the impression that the author finished writing the main story, decided it was too short, and then went back to randomly add filler; these sections just didn’t fit with the overall story and left me struggling to follow what was going on or get a feel for the characters.
