Always follow the instructions that come with your black market AI superweapon. Always. And be a real stickler about doing so.

I really liked the Yoruba culture that makes it into this novel through Lagos station and the people of Bloodroot. The extra-dimensional anscester spirit space aliens and the magic pixie dream girl half extra-dimensional space alien Joke' made the story seem like a good episode of Star Trek, though the character was not as well developed as most character's on Star Trek. I liked the ending quite a bit, though, and the way that the investigators/heros were completely not in control of anything.

I liked the story the authors was trying to tell, but this book has too many point of view characters and too little time spent on each. The book began seemingly with a single POV, but as the book went along more POVs were added, up until nearly the end of the book, with the characters introduced earlier rarely returning to their POV. It made it hard to get into any of their stories. Also, most of the POVs began with flashbacks, often deep into that character's past. The story felt bogged down at times instead of going forward.

the story and characters didn't grab me, I wasn't interested by the world building. I guess I'm not a murder mystery gal

There are things here to like, the setup is terrifying, the plot keeps moving along at a thriller pace, and it has a number of interesting ideas sprinkled in.

It does go off the rails at times and gets frustrating (what’s up with the pixie dreamgirl alien?), and many of those interesting ideas are not that well worked out.

Overall, reading it felt like watching one of those mid budget scifi films that “they don’t make anymore” (a la Pandorum 2009)

Great imaginative fun: Like the messier bits of Iain M Banks!

Locked room mystery on a long haul passenger ship through space. Interesting characters. Zany plot twists. At times I could feel the author pulling the strings a little, which was too bad, but generally I found it fun and surprising.

2.5 stars. I kept wanting more from each aspect of this book. I appreciate not particularly liking any character, they at least all felt authentic. This book doesnt "tell" but it also doesnt "show" so im not sure what it is doing to successfully give us a story.
