Great little story of Stephen King. I really enjoyed the building of tension and how the story enrolls with the final end. Fabolous read for the weekend or between books.

Read part of an excerpt for this during a Telling Room program a few years ago but never read the full thing. Now I have. What a wonderfully horrifying story!

The tension in this short story was incredible. I was so nervous through the entire second half. The ending is a bit ambiguous and some terrible things do happen, but that’s to be expected in a horror short. The story had some problems with pacing at the beginning and I find it hard to believe the mom would leave the kid alone in the house with gramma considering everything she knows but overall this was fantastic.

This gave me major shivers in the best way! The perfect blend of witchcraft, horror, and mystery. The story being told from the POV of a child is clearly a technique that Stephen King excels at which makes it even more terrifying for the reader when we start to see a child is in REAL danger but who's concerns are being brushed off as fantasy by adults.

The ending in particular is what makes this a 4 star read for me and what will make me remember it. It gave me that spine tingling feeling at the end when I realised the full implications of what had happened and that's exactly what I want from a short horror story.

"And then she spoke with a sudden, vicious bitterness that was like acid squirting out between her front teeth - he felt that her words were so hot they would have burned his face if he hadn't recoiled."

3.75/5 stars

At first, I did not fully understand this story because I was half asleep while reading it from the collection 'Skeleton Crew'. But now that I do, I can say that it is a very creepy and enjoyable short story.

I absolutely love stories that have the concept of continuity (in this case it is continuous possession from the '"Gramma" to George).
However, I do think this story was prolonged at certain areas. Hence, my star rating.
