This book has an interesting magic system. I like the way the elements work and the intrigue around the magic. Vhella is a very naive character trying very hard not to be. But the characters around her are often more competent and help to bring balance. The plot takes some unexpected turns. But I am interested to see where the series goes.

The writing is a little clumsy and the characterization of Vhalla is sometimes choppy, but the world building is good. Elemental powers reminiscent of Avatar: the Last Airbender and an empire at war.

The MC is painfully daft for the first half of the book and there’s an uncomfortable age difference between the two main characters -she’s 17 to his 24- although sure we see her next birthday I still think just because she’s been 18 a month doesn’t make it less weird
Color me intrigued however, I still want to know what happens (and I already got the 5 books so I might as well lol)
