The Marsh King's Daughter by Karen Dionne

This book had so many elements that appealed to me (set in Michigan, suspense novel, strong nature theme) but it just fell so flat. The characters were not well developed, the author kept trying to make the Hans Christian Anderson story of the same title tie in with the book, and it was too slow-paced for a suspense novel.

I have not disliked a main character this much in a while. The lacked enough details about her relationships with her husband and daughters to see why she would be protective of them. She seemed to prefer her father to them. I stuck through the book hoping for something exciting, but it was predictable.

I am so in love with this book!! Part fairy tale, part psychological thriller, all action. The Marsh King's Daughter definitely filled the void I was missing in all the books I've read this year. It's been so long since I have been so enthralled in a book that I lost sleep, but in such a good way. If you're looking for a book that will keep you guessing and maintain your interest throughout the entire novel, this is an excellent choice.

Just couldn't get interested in the novel. I wanted to know what was going to happen, if she ever find her father, but after reading over 100 pages I had to give up.

3.5 stars. I flew through this book but it was not the “thriller” I expected after seeing reviews from others. I thought the character development was extremely well done. The beginning really drew me in and the ending was pretty fast paced. However, the middle dragged a bit too much, weighed down by too many details and descriptions of wilderness scenes and graphic hunting stories. Overall, I would recommend this book, I just felt a little let down because it wasn’t necessarily the psychological thriller I was expecting.

This book is beautifully written but for me that was really all that was positive. This is the story of a woman who born by a woman who was kidnapped. Reading the synopsis I was excited to read it because it sounded right up my street. Unfortunately, it was not a thriller nor very exciting to me.

3.5 stars. I liked it enough but didn't love it. Perhaps I would have enjoyed this more had I not just finished another thriller (The Child Finder) involving child kidnapping. Both were set in cold, wintery areas though in different parts of the country. The ending with this one seemed a bit rushed and anti-climatic. i did appreciate the setting as I am completely unfamiliar with Michigan, especially the Upper Peninsula. I found myself looking at maps while reading to familiarize myself with where this book took place. I liked this author's writing style and will check out more of her writing.

A great story despite the predictable ending.
