So, this was my first read this year, and I’m happy it was this book! Also, it’s my second read series by Tahereh Mafi.
First of all, I’d say this book felt like it was split into two distinct parts:
Part One:
Kamran was basically like: I hate myself, I hate life, I hate people, I hate the world… Oh, wait—who’s that? A girl? A talented servant girl? A SPY GIRL?!
And Alizeh, on the other hand, was like: I clean. I take showers. Oh, you want to kill me? Here’s some bread. I’m hurt and really need sleep, but nah, I’ll keep going anyway.
There weren’t many events in this part, but was necessary to really introduce us to the characters? I don't know if there's a better way.
Part Two:
This is where things got delicious, and I’m so glad I kept reading!
The fact that the main characters only met a few times but still acted like old friends in love didn’t feel weird to me at all. Their thoughts and inner monologues really helped sell it.
Although Alizeh is the main character, I feel like we didn’t learn much about her. I’m still wondering who she really is and why she’s so quick to trust anyone who claims to serve her. On the flip side, we got to learn a lot about Kamran.
And then there’s Cyrus. (By the way, I still don’t know how to pronounce his name.) He wasn’t what I expected at all. Suddenly, there was chemistry between him and Alizeh—even though they dislike each other. I’m 100% here for the enemies-to-lovers trope in the next book.
Also, part two had me laughing. I swear, I couldn’t take the fights seriously whenever Cyrus was around. Sorry, but why does he have to be so arrogant and confident? Oh, and the whole friendship with Iblees thing? Wah. Such a classic bad boy move.
Will I read the next book?
Definitely! I’m dying to know what happens next.

i was so bored and not clicking with this until about 60% in. after that point though, i thoroughly enjoyed! i like kamran, but alizeh was sort of bland to me. i predict she will grow on me as the series goes on!
the ending of this was crazy, so i definitely will be reading the next one someday! i love tahereh mafi’s writing. i just know this series is going to end up having a bunch of twists and turns and i am intrigued to see what happens.

The plot felt too low stakes. Found myself not caring how things turned out.
