re-reading, found it in a box in my closet. I think I am going to read more of her books this summer, the ones I didn't read back in the day.

I love Robin McKinley, and I love fairy tales. I'd wanted to read this book, and I went onto my library's website and saw it was an everyone-read ebook here in San Francisco, so I quickly borrowed it. I'm saddened to say that I was too bored to finish. I got about a quarter of the way through the book, still in the first story, but I could not continue. These aren't really reimaginings, and they're not really dark like original fairy tales. They're just ok. I think maybe these would be good for children.

Honestly I'd give it 3.5. Started off sorta weak but each story grew progressively stronger and better written. The last was positively haunting.

A lovely set of short fairytale-like stories by Robin McKinley. Cozy and light reading, I adore her mythic prose. It makes me feel like a child reading fairytales in a sunlit nook.

This is a collection of four short fairy tales.
While there wasn’t anything wrong with the stories themselves I found the telling incredibly boring. There was a lot of descriptive paragraphs. And lots and lots of telling. The narrative was very dry and I think that was what tripped me most.
Other than that I liked Robin McKinley’s versions a lot.

Some books are like paintings. There is an impression of emotion, of action, of beauty. Some books have one such moment. This book is a gallery. The plot, character, & themes are all secondary to these vivid impressions.
