"Darkly funny," another reviewer called this book. I enjoyed the sarcasm and wit of narrator Hildy but I personally do not enjoy books or movies about people with such serious addiction problems. I am really uncomfortable reading/watching people inevitably ruin their lives over substance abuse. So I probably didn't enjoy it as much as other readers for that reason. But the plot was good, the character development was nice, and the shift at the end to a more thriller-esque story was interesting.

Not a fan of the author's writing style, the story took forever to build and I didn't like the characters albeit for garbage man Frank.

I loved this book. Interesting story, lots of twists and turns, a bit of humour and a bit of darkness. Kept me up later than I should have been and almost missed my subway stop a few times which is what you want in a book!

I really enjoyed this book! The character development and getting to know the small town and how the people in it interact was very entertaining. I live in Massachusetts myself and loved all the Boston & New England material in the story! The story itself isn’t intense or on the edge of your seat. It moves slowly like the narrator and the small town around it. The climax and “gossip” of the town is mild to those set in the city but it adds to the charm. I listened to the audiobook and as other reviews have said, it’s 100% the format I recommend! The narrator was perfect and I honestly think if I read this in print, I may have quit on it early due to the story’s slow development. But her narration seriously brought Hildy Good to life and made me want to be her friend ♥️

An interesting story of a woman and her addiction.

I never would have guessed that I would love a book, where the hero and narrator is a full-blown alcoholic who is (for the most part) completely in denial about her addiction. Ann Leary has really captured the complications of human nature and wrapped them up in an interesting story about life in a little, New England town. This is a great summer read, when you want an escape, but still want to read a very well-crafted novel.

Hildy Good is a handful - full of sassy gossip, backtalk, and raw honesty. The author, Ann Leary, describes a part of Massachusetts that felt familiar to me because of my own background. Loved the Yankee wisdom, family history containing a persecuted witch, alcoholism (recovery, denial, recovery), and seacoast setting.

3.5 stars because it kept my interest and I wanted to see how it was going to end, almost a who dunnit, but then it never really told me. Not being a drinker, the alcoholic Hildy was fascinating, such denial! The books was well written, smooth reading, but there were several things that occurred at the end that were not well wrapped up I thought.

So good! Loved it as an audiobook. The narrator was perfect

This book just felt all over the place to me - is it mystery, romance, fantasy, what is going on? Parts of the story were good but I feel like every time the author started to go off on a thread I was interested in, it was suddenly dropped (more Rebecca please!).
