I highly recommend the audiobook narration of this. I'm picky but this was exquisitely done.
A solid MEH. I liked it at first, then I got confused, then bored, and finally irritated. An inconsistent plot combined with an unreliable narrator makes for an uneven read.
Hildy Good (a proud descendant of witches) narrates this rambling but dull account of a couple of seasons selling real estate and being lonely in a small seaside town. Hildy - and this is important - doesn't think she's an alcoholic. Despite her daughters having sent her to rehab. Despite her DUI. Despite her blackouts. Despite the fact that she hides wine in her basement and once woke up flat on her back on the dirt floor.
This could have been great, but there were just too many jumps and holes in the plot. For example, This is a small town where everybody knows everything about everyone. In order to hide her continued drinking, Hildy orders wine from a winery, has it shipped to her house, and hides the bottles. Given the amount of wine she consumes daily, there's no way her delivery guy and trash guy aren't going to notice.
Great potential, disappointing execution. Skip it.

Summer read ~ not of great literary quality. But I really enjoyed reading this book. It takes place on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Throughout the book are references to towns, buildings, water, life .... that I grew up with.
Really well narrated audible book. This one slowly crept up on me and ended up being very touching
relaxing
slow-paced

Sets the stage for about 75% of the book and very little happens. I didn’t like any of the characters.
Did anyone else find the first half of the book slow?????? I vividly remember being on page 156 and saying "now it's getting interesting." Hildy is a good character, and the premise, that she is a realtor in a small New England town, who gets to know quite a lot about people in her community; is every appealing. I love that Hildy was an older and not flawless or beautiful character, but more real. Someone who has issues and struggles; the main one being denial of her drinking problem. The 2nd half of the book had a lot more insight into the characters, Rebecca, Peter and Hildy's old boyfriend Frankie. The end of the book had some great surprised and the writing was very good tying up loose ends and the feelings of the characters.
If you can get by the first half of the book it is a witty, real, heart-warming and fast 2nd half.

Hildy is an indelible woman, still slightly in love with her old flame Frank, but even more in love with alcohol. Leary does a masterful job of incorporating essential New England storytelling without mocking the legacy or traditions of the region. A solid story.
This was the audio book and the reader was amazing! Great book to listen to in the car.
