Excellent novel. Heartbreaking and uplifting all at the same time. Hildy and Frank- plus all of the characters will stay with me for a long time.

This book absorbs through your skin. From page one, I was pulled into the lives of the people in this small coastal New England town where each person has known each other’s families for generations. Each is intertwined in the history of the other- with a new family thrown in now and then. The main character, Hildy Good, justifies her escalating drinking problem and denial as part of the natural order of things. She is witty, intuitive, and intricately connected to the fiber of the community. Her problem is no secret to anyone, and many do their part to help her address it, but hoping for her wake up call does not keep the reader from loving her or this book. The characters are intimate, the book moves along at a good clip, the family is real and I like them all. I didn’t want this book to end.

Absolutely hated this book!! Main character is horrible. Bitter, gossipy, manipulative — and that’s when she’s sober! Did not care about her at all. In fact, none of the characters in this book were likeable or appealing. Or even realistic! The mother of a very autistic boy gets her house completely renovated and seems surprised her son doesn’t react well to all the changes?? Ugh I could go on with many other examples but honestly I just want to forget I ever read this book.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for excellent audiobook narration by Mary Beth Hurt. I appreciated this character-driven story of Hildy Good, her alcoholism, and her days in the fictional town of Wendover on the north shore of Massachusetts. A few of the main story lines didn’t fully pay off in the end.

A waste of time. I don't recommend this book at all.

Solid beach read, but it got a little too crazy at the end.

Really great. I listened to it on audio. The narrator was perfect. The story was so engaging that I listened every moment that I had to spare!

This book made me understand and empathize with alcoholism in a new way. Hildy was so like able and relatable.

Halfway through I still couldn't figure out the book. Couldn't finish it. Just wasn't getting it.

Good book with several semi-crazy people in it. Interesting viewpoint from a woman who thinks she has her life (and her drinking) under control and we, on the outside, can clearly see she doesn't. Interesting dynamic with other 'town-folk'.
