Loved it at first but about 68% thru (thx Kindle), the whole alcoholic in denial storyline became a bit tedious. It was well written, but wished there was more about her ability to go into people's houses (she's a realtor) and discern private details about their lives wirh her ability to "read" people via attention to details and possibly some inherited 6th sense. Would have added more nuance to the story when she had her "talk" with Peter at the end.
The audio narration by Mary Beth Hurt was superb! It elevated what would have otherwise been a 3* read.
I'm conflicted. I did really enjoy the writing and the characters were very well drawn. I found the small-town new money/old money/old townie descriptions compelling. I just didn't care for the characters themselves--just didn't like them. Most rather selfish and whiny. And while I don't dismiss a book because it has unlikeable characters, I guess I didn't feel strongly one way or the other about the characters nor their plights. I did find the main character, Hildy Good, to be an interesting narrator in the way she vascillated between acknowledging her alcoholism and dismissing it. That was illuminating.
Finally, I really like something! This book has great characters, especially the narrator, and terrific setting. It may have been a little short on story but it was still compelling. Some books make for good movies, but I could totally see this as a long running tv show. A good one.
The plot tends to meander around a bit and I'm not sure how Leary wants the reader to feel about Hildy, but the setting is perfectly drawn and the Sarah Good/psychic connection is subtly mind-blowing.
Just finished re-reading for the 3rd time, and I still completely love this book.
I’m having a hard time focusing on reading right now and kept picking up and putting down my Kindle on this one. The narrative got a little tedious and sad, focusing on alcohol addiction, but overall it was mildly entertaining.
