This book is an eye opening account of communist China. I learned so much about a subject that was never covered for me in school. It really makes you appreciate being born in the USA.
Lungo, ma ne vale assolutamente la pena.
Uno spaccato di una Cina novecentesca tanto affascinante quanto devastante.

This was a book that I read much too young, and I remember it making a distinct impression on me as a kid or 9 or 10. I vaguely remembered random details, and, more importantly, being quite disturbed by the details of these three generations of women in China (and sadly, even then, noticing similarities in Egyptian politics and culture). It also launched a life-long fascination of Eastern politics and histories (especially Russia and China). This book is just as fascinating, and even more disturbing than I remember. It's not a happy book, and there is little good that happens to these women, but it's a great, detailed look into Mao's China, the 'Great Leap Forward,' and to the history of Communism. Even though the subject material is dark and sometimes heavy, it's still incredibly readable and engrossing.
another great multigenerational story - writing felt a bit dry at times, and the mix between historical/biographical can be less than engaging, but otherwise a great read
A well written and moving story about the lives of three women as they live through the upheaval of traditional China and the rise of Moa. Highly recommeneded.
One of the best book I ever read. I studied China s xx century history into detail, but this book helped me open my mind about those events, and on the way they directly affected ordinary people. Amazing description of a unique experiment of social engineering such being Maoism and of how strong human cruelty or braveness can be when faced with the need of survival. Thanks to the person who recommended it to me (well, actually, to her mum :))
Brilliant meta-autobiography, in which the author writes about her grandmother's life, her mother's life, and her own, spanning 60 eventful years in China's history. A must-read.

Spectacular informative, heart-breaking book. There is so much tension and suffering that sometimes it does not even allow you to cry. With this book historical questions are becoming crystal clear and in the same time confuse the readse with all the thraumatic experiences.
