Wild Swans by Jung Chang gave me a glimpse into the horrors seen through the eyes of women across three generations. Yu-Fang (Jung's Grandmother) was the last generation to experience bound feet and betrothal to a high ranking warlord which granted prosperity to the family. Shortly after Bao Qin (Jung's Mother) was born, Yu-Fang managed to escape for her own happiness. Bao met Jung's Father during a time of unrest when they chose the side which aligned with their hopes for the future...and where the horrors also began.
I love the archive which showed Boa Qin's childhood and gruelling Red Guards training. Jung herself became part of the Red Guards during the Cultural revolution which also oversaw mass starvation during the Great Leap Forward. Eventually Jung left China and settled in the UK.
I will always remember Wild Swans for being the first book to captivate my attention to learning about my history.
