Es un libro perfecto para adentrarse en los años de terror del comunismo de Mao en China, de la mano de la misma autora y su familia que lo vivió en sus carnes. Aunque está considerado autobiografía (que lo es), creo que tira más para la no ficción, en lugar de convertirse en un relato un poco más personal, que era lo que esperaba cuando empecé esta lectura. Pero aun así, es recomendable, muy largo, pero vale la pena cada capítulo.

This is... well, amazing. I couldn't put it down, and it's one of those books that didn't make me grind my teeth. Jung's ability to weave together the life story of her grandmother, mother, and her own story was nothing short of amazing. I especially loved the section on her grandmother and just how cohesive it seemed to be. In this biography/autobiography, we get a look at there women who grew up in three very different times in China. We have the grandmother during the last faltering years of the Qing dynasty and the building of warlord China. We have the mother during the early years of the communist regime when it still seemed like it might work. And we have the daughter, growing up in the midst of the Cultural Revolution. It's three startling different stories and I really enjoyed it!

Another reminder how thankful I am for winning the birth lottery. This absorbing biography provides a glimpse of life in China throughout much of the 20th century, via the experiences of the author, her mother and grandmother. Through their stories, we learn of the fear, brutality, hardship, turmoil, and betrayal that were endured. Chang also provides us with an understanding of the strength, tenacity, courage, and occasional kindness shown by many of the people in their lives.

Chang provides a necessarily brief historical overview of China during this time, including the Japanese occupation, rise of communism, and the cultural revolution. This is not an easy story, but provides the reader with an understanding of the political and cultural influences of China during this period.
