3.5 ⭐️ when we were dating, my now husband asked me what my love languages were. I actually didn’t know, so we took the quiz together. I was curious to hear a deep dive into each love language and found the explanation of each actually really interesting. Some of the ideas in this book came across as a little too traditional and felt dated but over all really interesting and is great for understanding your own love languages and your partners! My husband and I retook the quiz after I read the book and it’s interesting how we each have changed in percentages! I think it’s something we’ll revisit every few years.

We were gifted this book, and did not finish due to Gary's ridiculously gendered perspectives and harmful/heavy handed advice. If you want to read to identify your love language, I recommend stopping after chapter 8.

Gary purports himself as an all knowing relationship healer who is 'completely changing relationships' left and right. In Gary's world, perhaps love is a woman putting dinner on the table and keeping the house tidy; and a man talking to his wife for 15 minutes a day.

In his analogies, Gary uses biblical references to manipulate his clients into 'giving it a go' via sex with a partner who has "cursed her, mistreated her, told her he hates her, ignored her, made her feel sexually used, and unimportant." This kind of messaging is harmful and wrong, no one is obliged to have sex with a partner who's love language is Physical Touch in the effort to get them to treat their partner well.

Take the online quiz, communicate what actions make you feel loved, and don't take the time on the book.

5 Love Languages
Read: Feb 23, 2022

This book was recommended to me by my bible study ladies. It was a transformative read which breaks down the concept of love languages which are different ways people express and receive love. What I enjoyed most about this book is the clear and accessible writing. The author describes emotional dynamics in ways that are easy to understand, and he provides practical actionable steps for readers to apply to their own relationships such as a quiz for readers to identify their own love language. The added personal anecdotes and case studies adds depth and relatability to the five primary love language concepts: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch.

Rated: 4.0/5.0—Overall, this was a valuable resource for anyone wanting to learn more about themselves and how they can build meaningful relationships in their lives with their friends, family, and spouses.
