I finished it because I thought the trite, heavy-handed, clumsy language was a setup for some kind of explosive character growth or something. There's no way King would actually escapist expect people to be touched or delighted by this...right? Wrong lol. He was totally serious.
I can't believe he wasn't too embarrassed to turn this in to his editor/publisher. It sounds like a first draft of an angsty middle school creative writing assignment. Or really bad AI. To top it off, the descriptions of food in this book make me wonder if Stephen King has ever cooked...or eaten...anything in his life.
There was no nuance to the characters and every description of "the lesbians" had an unnecessary description of how shapely their legs were or how their shorts fit. Among the cast of one-dimensional characters were: gruff burly construction dude, abrasive athletic lesbian and her submissive/emotional/naïve wife (both vegetarians), kind elderly town doctor, gossipy church ladies, and rude (but we're supposed to see him as misunderstood) middle-aged hetero white male who swears he just wants to do the right thing and feels like he can't get a break

This novella is actually the very first Stephen King book I've read, and I feel like it's a good introduction to his writing, even though Elevation is definitely not horror.
There aren't many characters--just Scott Carey, the married lesbian couple, his retired doctor friend and the wife, and some extras. Set in fictional Castle Rock, Scott finds out he's slowly losing weight even though his appearance hasn't changed. Everything he touches becomes temporarily weightless. His weight loss isn't stopping, and he is worried about what will happen when he finally reaches Zero Day.
The story is filled with cookie cutter characters, with a simple plot and an ending that makes you go "huh....okay." Like a said, it's a decent story. Not mindblowing, just decent.

I love King's writing. I've been a King fan since high school. But the plot of this one...

For what it is, a short kitschy novella with a fun premise, it's good. No complaints. I read it in under two hours while my toddler colored and it was a fun, well balanced, read.
Quick and entertaining, kind of a weird story, and a very weird ending. Honestly thought it would end a different way, although this was logical.
Cute, short, light. I enjoy that the interesting premise is the force behind the story, but not the focus. Not much to say honestly, a nice little one sitting read.
