Ik ben dól op Stephen King, maar deze novelle wist me niet te pakken. Misschien komt het omdat het een novelle is, simpelweg te weinig pagina’s om me goed te hechten en in te leven in de personage’s? Ik heb genoten van de maatschappelijke boodschap die Stephen met dit boekje geeft.. desondanks bleef ik zitten met het gevoel dat er iets miste. Het vertrouwde horror element is overigens ver te zoeken, je zou dit boekje hoogstens bij sci-fi kunnen indelen.
Ik ben wel bevooroordeeld als Kingfan. Ik vond het boekje echt heel boeiend, maar ik had toch iets meer verwacht, en ben daardoor een beetje teleurgesteld.

I've been a loyal Stephen King fan since my dad took me to see "Christine" in the 1980's. Since then, King has shown me the gamut of literature. From horror: "Pet Sematary" to post-apocalyptic: "The Stand," to sci-fi "The Tommyknockers" and fantasy "The Talisman." We've been through police procedurals "Mr. Mercedes" and monthly serial "The Green Mile." We've seen thrillers "Sleeping Beauties" and drama in "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption." I thought I had seen everything he had to show me. Well I was wrong. This little book is only 146 pages but is King's newest foray, into true academic literature.

This is a short story and a commentary on today's society where people justify hatred and hateful behavior because someone is different... in this novel, it's because two characters are a married lesbian couple, though you could just as easily swap out Muslim, Jewish, Latino, Liberal, etc. The story itself is about a man who suddenly finds himself a little lighter on the bathroom scales, even though his body is not changing. There is some symbolism here and there, whether it is purposeful or not is something only King can reveal, though as an English-degreed person I suspect it's the former. There is some alcohol use and some adult language.

I really enjoyed this little book and think that this could easily be a new favorite of mine. I heartily recommend it!

Not too bad, but over the years I have come to expect more from Stephen King. Yes this is an imaginative story but it felt a little lack lustre, almost rushed and padded out a little.
