Stephen King

3.49 AVERAGE

I've never been interested in reading King's horror stuff, so this bite sized option seemed like just the right way to get a taste of his way with words. I realize this isn't vintage King, but I adored this sweet story of tolerance and caring for each other, with a fun super natural twist. Spoiler alert - I love that things weren't explained or tied up neatly with a bow, but I finished very satisfied and with a smile on my face.

Not the typical Stephen King fare.

This story is about an average Joe suffering from a not-so-average affliction. The results of which leads to the town of Castle Rock opening their hearts and minds to the town's newest residents.

While the story has a beginning, middle and (I guess) an end. The story didn't leave me with any particular feeling one way or another. With King's last few books being 400+ pages, this "non-story" was mercifully a novella of about 150 pages. Thank goodness for small blessings.

Short, sweet, easy read. I always love books set in New England in the fall and Mr. King works his usual magic with excellent setting writing. There were lots of cliches in this short little gem but I’m sticking with four stars because today I needed a story about joy and love and awe not being diminished by a terminal illness. That overwhelmed the number of stereotypes and dated references that might otherwise have really annoyed me. I needed some tissues, that’s worth some stars too. There’s also a cat (and two dogs) and some excellent Mexican food here...that’s pretty much my perfect life.

I don’t even know what to say be honest, would not recommend. It’s just a book that no one else would ever publish, and for good reason.

Echoing what almost everyone else has said about this book: it's disappointing. I usually don't read King minus 11/22/63 which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm not a big horror or sci-fi fan, but I was expecting to feel something by the end of this book and it just flopped. I was hoping the novella style read would pack a punch like King usually does for his longer books, but the characters were dull, the plot was lackluster, and the writing wasn’t great. I'd skip this one, regardless if you're a King fan or not.

Beautiful

"Beautiful" is not a word often used to describe King's books. But this one is. It's the story of an extraordinary thing that happens to an ordinary man, and the extraordinary way he deals with it.

Sehari setelah baca, masih terasa berat dan sedih. :))
