Elevation

Stephen King

3.49 AVERAGE

Rounded up from 2.5. Short and kind of pointless but an easy read.

Didn’t think I’d ever find myself finishing a Stephen King book in just a few short sittings, but here we are. This is an interesting sort of novella, both similar to his other work but also nothing like it. I liked some of the political commentary, but I wish it played more of a role throughout. I kept searching for an allegorical message that I never really found. The ending left me with a feeling of sadness but also of hope, it’s a weird sort of emotion to sort out with a main character in such a predicament. Quick read, good dialogue (to be expected of King), a really interesting and engaging premise. Worth checking out.

“This was the same. Not a wind, not even a high, exactly, but an elevation. A sense that you had gone beyond yourself and could go farther still.”

I should start this off by saying that I'm not a huge fan of Stephen King. I tend to prefer his short stories and non-horror entries. So I don't necessarily disagree with some of the critiques I've seen that King fans might not like this one. It's definitely a rarity for him. I thought it was a really nice story though. It's surprisingly poignant without trying too hard and it has a nice air of whimsy to it and a good message we need more of these days. It's a fast read and worth the time so long as you aren't expecting a deep delve or something too typical of the author.

I enjoyed the metsphor of this book, what I interpret it to be is that you are better off shedding the weight of your biases, prejudices, or even little things that bother you. So much that you may feel so light & happy you could just float away! It was a wonderful short read & I really enjoyed rhe friendship that blossomed. Stephen king is a great writer, I truly have not disliked anything by him yet!

This a very wholesome story from King about acceptance and love rather than tolerance. I love how he brings characters to life so easily even in shorter format. Of course they are not the most perfectly written most considered characters I’ve ever read, but it’s not really the point. I love the metaphor of the “disease”. Daily sufferings and hold ups can really weigh people down, but as our main character started to let go of the small matters like not getting angry at a snippy remark or being stopped by fear he flourished and felt free and happy. There other end of things I think is also being said is that not feeling anything at all and letting it roll off your back can also make you feel untethered from the world and a different can of worms in terms of problems. King is not shy in being vocal about his beliefs and thoughts socially and politically and that is true in the short story as well, and even though some don’t like it, I do!
