Elevation

Stephen King

3.49 AVERAGE

This a very wholesome story from King about acceptance and love rather than tolerance. I love how he brings characters to life so easily even in shorter format. Of course they are not the most perfectly written most considered characters I’ve ever read, but it’s not really the point. I love the metaphor of the “disease”. Daily sufferings and hold ups can really weigh people down, but as our main character started to let go of the small matters like not getting angry at a snippy remark or being stopped by fear he flourished and felt free and happy. There other end of things I think is also being said is that not feeling anything at all and letting it roll off your back can also make you feel untethered from the world and a different can of worms in terms of problems. King is not shy in being vocal about his beliefs and thoughts socially and politically and that is true in the short story as well, and even though some don’t like it, I do!

Didn’t really seem to have much of a point. Or plot. But I liked the characters and it was relatively short, finished it on a flight home from Maine.

Having just been in Maine, I could really visualize the story.

Ihmeellisen kaunis kertomus, joka jätti minut ihan häkeltyneeksi.

So sweet!

WHAT I LOVED

Oh my gosh, I just devoured this little book. My friend and coworker gave me this book to try written by Stephen King because I requested a “not scary” book by him, and this one did not disappoint. Thank you, AJ!

It’s a parable of a man with a strange condition that cannot be explained in which he seems to be losing weight but looks exactly the same despite the number on the scale. He becomes very spry but continues to lose weight. While this is happening he becomes aware of a couple in town, who have previously annoyed him, but are being blackballed because of their personal relationship choices. Their restaurant is about to go under and he realizes he should help, despite the women not wanting his help or favors. An unlikely friendship and life-changing condition make for an unforgettable and moving story. Loved it!

Scott's a good guy with something really weird happening to him. He's losing weight but yet he doesn't look he is. As he tries to figure out what's happening to him, he runs across a few folks that end up becoming special people to him. A short story that towards the end, the emotions shared by friends touched me in a way that I teared up.
