I can't decide what I think of this novella (packaged as a novel). I borrowed it from the library expecting something scary (it's not) and not something almost hopeful. I guess it fell a bit flat for me emotion-wise.
Klassieke Stephen King. Normale man met groot hart overkomt iets abnormaals.
A timely story read by the author. I really liked the short story at the end, too.
tl;dr: Not what you might expect from a King novel, more focused on the human than the supernatural. It's a short, fairly bittersweet novel that's a fairly light read. There's nothing here that makes it stand out enough for a five-star rating, but it's certainly enjoyable.
Summary: Scott Carey, a resident of Castle Rock, Maine, has noticed that he's losing weight without any physical changes. He's dropped to 240lbs but he still looks like he's 270lbs. After confiding in his close friend, a doctor, Scott's outlook on life shifts and he aims to make his time before hitting 0lbs as positive as possible. The focus of the novella shifts towards the intolerance exhibited by many of the small town's residents towards an openly lesbian couple who have opened a restaurant.
Thoughts: This was not at all what I expected when I started the novel, there's actually not as much focus on Scott's odd condition as you might expect from the majority of the novel. The focus is largely on the intolerant views of those in Castle Rock, and I quite enjoyed Scott's crusade against the homophobes.
Scott makes for a very compelling protagonist and goes through a surprising amount of change over the course of such a short book. Likewise, the cast of supporting characters including the doctor and the lesbian couple are compelling characters too. I found myself quite emotionally invested in the characters.
I thought that the pacing of the novel was good. The plot orbits a 12k run that takes place in the town and I found the buildup to and the results of the event helped tie together the different elements of the novella. I was also impressed by the ending, though I won't go into any detail about that.
If you're a fan of King then you'll enjoy this because it's something different from what he usually writes, and if you're not already a fan then you should enjoy this too, it's an enjoyable, quick read!

If Revival is to me Stephen King's novel that most struck me in my fears, Elevation is the book that struck me hardest in the heart.
And to me, that makes it his best piece of work ever.

always enjoy a King short story. This was an audio book, so bonus that it was read by Mr. King himself.
Not his best. I’m hovering between a 2 and a 3. It veered too far into the sentimental, but King is always a great storyteller, even when he’s telling a mediocre story.
Really odd and incredibly moving with an ending that I read on the train so I had to force myself not to cry. These are the kind of things we need in the current climate.
