Gotta say, I wasn’t really feeling this during the first third, but I absolutely spiralled through this in one go during my following reading session. King’s dedication to his craft in the form of writing is just so admirable and interesting, and this novel never really lets up. Admittedly, I think the fantastical elements are slightly weak, making me wish that King had simply wrote a plain story about the power of acceptance, alas.
It’s a cosy read, and feels like classic King. You can’t really go wrong.

This is one of the worst books I've ever read, my God.
How did this win best horror of 2018? Despite the fact it's not even a horror story every other horror writer on the planet had to of DIED for this to even be considered for the award.
Was this book a joke? There's no way this was written seriously. It was so politically correct that I almost thought it was ironic, but no, it's serious.
King unironically calls lesbians "lesbeans" multiple times, talks about how attractive the lesbian main character is, and how Scott "can't help" but check out her body, there's a "the townspeople are so dumb and ignorant, and they definitely all voted for Trump" scene. Holy F**K the Trump scene was trying so goddamn hard. Trump is mentioned one time and it's to use voting as him for a reason the townspeople don't like lesbians. I don't like Trump either but god, it's like those protesters that have signs with stuff like "Trump is Voldemort, what would Dumbledore do" it's that but a book.
Jesus CHRIST THIS WAS SO BAD. The stuff with him rapidly losing weight, funnily enough, carries no weight, because it never pays off, never gets a satisfying conclusion, and takes a back seat the ENTIRE BOOK until after Scott appeases the "lesbeans".
I am actually angry after reading this book.

Really fast, quick read. As imaginative as other SK books but much lighter.
I didn’t enjoy the political virtue signaling from King. I feel like such one dimensional caricatures are overdone and unoriginal, which is why I give the book three stars.
But looking beyond that, I did find the second half to be much more enjoyable. I think, from a chronic illness or life-threatening illness perspective, it would have felt a little more authentic to see our MC, Scott, go through some more realistic stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, acceptance, etc. since we were seeing these types of reactions and interactions play out with other characters.
