This is a fantastic stand-alone book, but the Easter eggs are all over the pages if you read The Legends of Thezmarr series and I adored it! The way I would giggle at young Wilder knowing what happens just a few years in to the future. Highly recommend you read this within The Legends of Thezmarr for a top notch experience.

I followed the recommended reading order for The Legends of Thezmarr series (the one promising emotional damage), and I’m so glad I did. Getting the backstory really helped answer some of the questions that came up in Blood & Steel and Vows & Ruins. The characters are well developed and easy to connect with, and the world-building just keeps getting better. I’m absolutely loving this series!
Take a trip to the past
Drue Emmerson has lost everything to the shadows; her mother and brothers, her home, her kingdom.
Talemir Starling is silently battling a darkness of his own, not trusting even his closest friend with his secret.
When Talemir is sent to Naarva to kill Drue for tampering with the precious metal used to make the Warswords weapons, he never expected for a Drue to be a woman, nor that she would capture his heart in an instant.
I really didn’t want to read this directly after Vows & Ruins because the cliffhanger had me broken and needing answers immediately! I am so glad I listened and read this first.
We get a lot of side/backstory in this book that answers many questions, but of course Helen would leave us with so many more. Ultimately, this is a story of overcoming obstacles; physically, mentally and emotionally. Both Talemir and Drue have had traumatic pasts linked to the shadows that puts an immense strain on their partnership. Reading the changes in their behaviors towards one another was a highlight of the story.
The tension is so thick in this story! We know how their story ends due to the past books but getting there was such an intense journey!
It was also brilliant seeing a younger, less refined Wilder. I am still raving because of the last story, but the relationship between him and Talemir is such a point of contention, I wanted to know so much more about.
Gus is a precious baby nugget and must be protected at all costs!

It was good but nearly as informative as people made it seem. I thought it was necessary for me to read this before continuing in the series. I don’t think it was.
I read Slaying the Vampire Conqueror first and adored it so decided to try another of the Mortal Enemies to Monster Lovers book. Have a soft spot for shadow daddies and winged men so this was the obviously pick. Slaying the Shadow Prince did not disappoint. I ADORED Talemir and his teasing personality and Drues strong resilient personality. The chemistry and bickering between them was delightful!
This started off a little slow for me, but OH MY GOD!!! After it picked up, i was 1000% invested. This book made me become even more obsessed with this amazing series than i already was!!! These characters, the banter, the connections…it’s all just absolutely amazing and it will forever hold my heart!!!!!!! ❤️
