This was a difficult book. The part about Sojourner's life was moving and powerful, but the part about religion was confusing and tedious. I wouldn't recommend this one, but instead a summary of the book.

Besides the value of learning about the broad strokes of Sojourner Truth’s life, the narrative frame consists of a tedious moralizing interjection by the ghostwriter which is quite uninteresting. This narrative fails to capture much that is interesting about Truth’s life, with scant examples of the content of her preaching and lecturing, particularly as it relates to the antislavery movement. Instead, the brief glimpses focus on religious ideas.

It is an interesting point of view of a person freed from slavery in the north instead of the south. I liked how it showed the authors opinions change throughout her life. She had some tough struggles and I thought it was an inspiring story of perseverance and growth.

Much of this biography was moving, fascinating and educational. However there is quite a lot about Isabella/ Sojourner’s relationship to Christianity, which became tiresome. I think a person who believes in God and or believes in Christianity may find this part of the book just as moving and fascinating, but it was mostly opaque for me.
I am glad to have read this; the accounts of Sojourner’s life and her family broadened my understanding of the enslavement of Black peoples in the US, and gave me more questions about aspects I still don’t know enough about.
