Katie Green documents her eating disorder beginning in early childhood through her college years in this amazing graphic novel. There are a lot of serious issues addressed in this novel but they are dealt with in a compassionate and gentle manner.

This graphic memoir is incredibly important. Katie Green was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa as an adolescent and she experiences disordered eating behaviors and thoughts about her body into young adulthood. She also experienced a traumatic event that involved non-consensual sexual activity (content warning). It is written in pretty much 100% black and white, but when the color appears in the book, it truly symbolizes the only flecks of hope the author/artist felt in her life and it shook me to the core. She used visual metaphors of a mouth superimposed over her stomach representing hunger or the urge to binge/overeat, and varied the density, length, and width of a black scribble to represent her disordered thoughts screaming at her. It was heartbreaking, but also so important. You can tell how much art and drawing really helped her through her recovery process.

Excellent read. I would highly recommend.

Lighter than my shadow is an incredible autobiography chronicling the life and struggles Katie faced with body issues and eating disorders throughout her life.

This novel is in the top five of any graphic novel I have yet read and after reading a previous publication I have thrust it on many people telling them they need to read it.

The story follows Katie throughout her family life, her school life, and also some personal and very unfortunate events all of which have been affected by this disorder.

The are works perfectly with the story, describing her condition as a black cloud that hangs over her so as she gets worse the cloud gets darker and larger. My favourite point is as she gets so bad that she blacks out, the cloud grows so large that the page is engulfed so all you can see is black, just as she had.

This is a must buy for anyone, you will not regret it!

Really really well written and illustrated novel that deals with a tough issue
Personally it really helped me find confidence and I highly recommend this to anyone struggling whether with an eating disorder or other mental health issues

LOVED IT!!!!!!!

4.5 stars

I got through about a third. The publisher did not help things. The ink is shiny, and the pages semi-glossy, so on pages with thicker lines, I had to tilt the book this way and that to reduce glare. The paper stock is thick, making the book very heavy, so physically it's hard to hold. Some of the dialog is too close to the gutter.

As others have noted, it's hard to tell some of the characters apart. In addition, the artist does not use traditional speech bubbles, so it's hard to tell which character is talking.

I’ve never believed a graphic novel would’ve touched me as much as the one I’ve just read. It’s an outstanding read.
