wow....this is so intense. the fact that ottessa uses free indirect discourse to make warped, lonely views of the world seem like facts in her narration is so haunting. her word choice is striking and i liked the fact that this was more character driven than plot driven

I surprisingly really enjoyed this! It absolutely is as disgusting and horrific as people claim it to be, and in general the cast of characters are intensely dislikable (by design). Relative to other work by Moshfegh this is certainly more immersive - the inner workings of the Village of Lapvona were interesting to see and I liked how some of the subplots connected. It was somewhat predictable towards the latter half but the increasingly surreal and religious undertones were interesting!

A lot of details on excrement and shit. Loads of grape, sexual harassment, incest, regurgitated food, eyeballs, cannibalism ...

so I came to the reviews and I was shocked by the amount of people that were like ooooooh the grape scene is soooo visceral and ooooh the cannibalism meanwhile I was just like oh… that was important? i think the book just, from the get-go, desensitized me to like poopenfarten stuff so when those things do happen I had no real reaction. so sick of coming to novels reading 5-star reviews like “this was deeply dark and disturbing” and actually reading the book and finding it boring in its banality
